Can You Treat a Tooth Abscess at Home? Why Prompt Dental Care Matters

A man has Abscess tooth issue

A tooth abscess is an infection that needs prompt professional care. Home remedies cannot cure it. Contact a dentist urgently if you think you have an abscess; do not wait for the pain to become severe.

When to get emergency medical help

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department immediately if you have difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing; a swollen or painful eye or a change in vision; major swelling in your mouth; or difficulty opening your mouth. Do not wait for a routine dental appointment if you have these symptoms.

What symptoms need a dentist’s attention?

Decay, gum disease or a cracked tooth can allow an infection to develop. Signs can include tooth or gum pain, swelling, redness, a bad taste or fever. An infection around a tooth’s root may cause little or no pain, so less pain does not establish that the problem has gone away.

What does treatment involve?

A dentist will assess the cause and severity. Depending on the findings, care may involve draining the infection, treating gum disease, root canal treatment or removing a tooth that cannot be saved. Antibiotics may be part of the plan when indicated. Your dentist will explain which treatment addresses the source of the infection.

What can I do while arranging care?

Choose soft foods, clean gently with a soft toothbrush and avoid food or drinks that are very hot or cold if they cause discomfort. These measures may help you feel more comfortable while awaiting treatment; they do not replace it. Do not attempt to drain an abscess yourself. Ask your dentist or pharmacist about pain relief appropriate for your health and medicines.
