Veneers, Bonding or Crowns: Questions for Your Cosmetic Consultation

Deciding between veneers, bonding or crowns can feel overwhelming because each option involves different amounts of tooth structure and different long-term care. A cosmetic consultation can help clarify your goals and what an exam can determine for you personally. General information about cosmetic care is available on the cosmetic dentistry page, with additional pages on veneers, bonding and crowns.

Veneers cover the front surface of a tooth. Enamel removed to place a veneer cannot grow back, so ask about preparation before deciding. Decay or gum disease must be addressed before veneers are placed. Veneers can chip, loosen or need repair or replacement over time, and bite or clenching habits influence suitability. Coverage can be excluded by some plans. Learn more from the ADA.

Crowns are different in purpose. The ADA describes a crown as covering a tooth and often supporting a weakened or broken tooth, not simply a cosmetic upgrade. Whether a crown is appropriate is decided by individual exam findings. ADA overview of crowns.

Bonding attaches material directly to a tooth to change its appearance. Alongside veneers, bonding and crowns, ask whether another approach, such as whitening or orthodontic care, could address your concern. ADA smile options.

Questions that help you compare options

Bringing focused questions makes the visit more useful.

Tooth preservation and health first

  • What oral health issues need to be addressed before any cosmetic work?
  • How much tooth structure would be involved for each option I am considering, and what is irreversible?
  • How will the choice affect long-term maintenance and repair needs?

Bite, function and habits

  • How does my bite or clenching influence which option is suitable?
  • Will my daily habits, such as grinding, change the plan or require additional protection?

Materials, expectations and limits

  • What material choices exist and how do they relate to durability, appearance and maintenance?
  • What results are realistic for my specific teeth and concerns?
  • What alternatives, such as whitening or orthodontic care, could address the same concern with less or different intervention?

Costs and estimates

  • What will the written estimate include and what could change it?
  • How can I verify what my specific plan may or may not cover for cosmetic procedures?
  • What is included in the out-of-pocket estimate and what is not?

Take-to-appointment checklist

  • List the specific changes you would like and why they matter to you.
  • Note any sensitivity, history of chipping, grinding or previous dental work.
  • Bring a current medication list and relevant medical and dental history for the clinician.
  • Bring your dental insurance card and ask how to verify benefits for each proposed option.
  • Ask about tooth preparation for each option, including what is irreversible, such as enamel removal for veneers, and how that affects future care.
